I was down at Patriots Place in Foxborough for an Endzone Network event. It was a well attended event as usual. Dan estimated there to be about 150 people. Actually this is a little less than usual which I was guessing was due to poor weather.
I was off to the side talking with someone I had met before and meeting someone new. While the three of us were talking socially a guy walked up and introduced himself. Truthfully, I have no idea what his name was. The question was asked “what do you do?” and he went off like someone hit play on a tape recorder. You know the type. He was selling us all right then and there.
What did I do? I waited until he took his first breathe. Now this took a few minutes but I waited patiently and listened to him. I listened to his great offering and what a deal and the babbling. Then he took a breathe. I chimed in…
“Excuse me, I don’t want this to sound rude. I’m not speaking for anyone but myself. Again, I don’t mean to be rude but I’m not interested in your commercial. I’m just going to excuse myself now. Have a great night.”
Is that bad? Was I mean to do this? I think I am just naive enough to hope or pray that maybe he would pick up on this. Maybe he just might realize that people don’t like being thrown up on, especially not in person. I’m at a networking event to meet and talk to people. I’m not buying anything today. You’re not going to sell me anything. You don’t have my undivided attention.
