Facing Stereotypes

by CJ Bowker on November 24, 2009

Go read Seth Godin’s recent post How to lose an argument online.

Pay close attention to #4.  Now think of the name of this blog.  Is it more or does everyone feel that I have an ulterior motive?  I mean people don’t always come out and question my motives.  Once in a while they do.  I don’t have a problem passing on working with someone like this.  One person’s business is not going to make or break my career.  The luxury of having my own business is that I reserve the right to work with people that I share the same values with.  But it doesn’t usually get to this point.  I try to ask about it and get an understanding of where it is coming from.

The problem with my industry is that most people aren’t very good.  They are trained poorly and pushed to sell.  Is it their fault?  Who knows, but I feel like they are expected to fail so how can the insurance company make as much money off of them in the shortest period of time.  Interesting business model?  That’s what I feel like I’m facing.  This image of everything I will never be.

Is it just me?  Am I overthinking things?  How do you deal with someone that questions you?
