Genius Personal Branding

by CJ Bowker on June 2, 2010

I was talking with someone the other day in regards to the name she uses.  I was a bit confused because I’d seen two different last names and I wasn’t sure which one was hers.  Her response was…

I use my middle name as my last name.

That was a bit intriguing to me so I had to ask, why?

Because my last name is going to change and I don’t want my brand to have to.

That made so much sense to me.

I never gave it all that much thought because truthfully, I don’t ever plan on having to worry about my name changing.  For women it’s a different world.  You see all sorts of woman do things from changing their name, not changing their names, hyphenating.  Times have changed.  Woman no longer have a social norm of taking the man’s last name.  That being said planning ahead can mean a lot less work later on.  Who wants to celebrate one of the best days of their lives just to rebuild their brand that they’ve built a lifetime building?

Here’s a woman that has the foresight to maintain a brand through change.  She’s not even engaged yet.  I love it.

How have you planned ahead for your personal brand?

What have you done to adjust for name changes and changes in your personal lives?

Huh, interesting idea. I suppose she could continue using her old last name as the brand even after it changed, but then it is odd to have people refer to you by a name you no longer use. Much nicer just to go with the middle name.

Jackie:

There’s definitely other ways to do it. Most woman probably don’t even think ahead. I think it’s a creative, forward thinking thing to do. Thanks for the comment.

Hmm, that’s pretty original! I guess it works as long as you have a great middle name!

If she had a middle name like Sally, that wouldn’t work so well.. ex Michelle Sally? or maybe it would?

2 point for your friend for originality!!!
