I play basketball every Thursday night and Sunday morning. This past Thursday night I heard that one of the guys, probably the most dominant guys there, won’t be playing on Thursday nights anymore. My initial reaction was, that makes sense. This morning he was there and I found out he is playing in a couple of other leagues with some of his friends and playing more basketball.
To give you some insight, I don’t play in an overly competitive league. It’s more of an old man’s league. What this means is you get some really good shooters. People can hit a ton of shots. What lacks is probably the athleticism. People come out and try their hardest. They run hard and most of the time make the open shots. The key is they play for fun. That’s why I enjoy it.
The guy I mentioned earlier just got out of college about a year ago. He is also about 6’6″-6’7″. If you were paying attention I called this an old man’s league. I’m guessing he’s 23-24 years old. This means he’s 4-5 years younger than anyone else out there and he’s 4-5″ inches taller. Yes, this gives him a definite advantage.
Why am I telling you this? Because he is only going to get so good playing with us. Yes it might help him get into basketball shape, running up and down the court. If he’s taken time off (which he had) then it will help him get use to playing again. It seems he’s used it as a good stepping stone. The problem with our league is that he is not going to be challenged.
In your business what circles do you travel in? If you are more successful than those around you or you make more money, do you still want to get to the next level? You might need to find a new circle.
Right now I’m comfortable playing in this league. Although I was going to play somewhere else as well but the opportunity fell through. But basketball isn’t a priority for me, it’s a means to stay in shape. For business, you might be comfortable where you are. If you want to grow, you might start by evaluating the circle in which you do business. The easiest way to grow might be to find a new circle.

Great post! Sometimes, you will actually play at a lesser level (kind of like I do with my kids) because you know that you’re the best, and why embarrass the others…
But if you go to a higher level ring, where you have to work harder… makes sense

You make a great point that I don’t bring up. When you play at a lower level you very well might play down to the level of people around you. That might mean that you aren’t living up to potential in your business. I had a similar experience to this in an office I use to work in. The people in the office would waste a lot of time and I found myself getting caught up in it as well. I changed my circles.
CJ – I used to shoot the rock a lot, but retired due to injuries. Just focus on tennis now.
I tend to hang out with my tennis crew from the club, who are actually a diverse range of socio-economic classes despite the $200/month membership fee. Mostly they are all professional men in senior positions though. Hmm.
