What do you do?

by CJ Bowker on March 1, 2010

Open for Business

Seems like an easy enough question doesn’t it?

How do you answer that?  You might have a few different ways depending on who you are talking to.  Some people have their networking answer.  Usually referred to as an ‘elevator speech’ we all have our short answer for when you are asked at a networking event.

For me, I tell people I help business owners find, keep and enjoy their money.

That is what I do for the people I have a business relationship with but it isn’t the core of my business.  What is your business at it’s core.

Mine is attracting, servicing and developing loyal clients.

Think about that for a second.  It says nothing about how or what I really do but without those three things I have no business, no matter what my business is.

Chances are we’re more alike than you think.

A lot of small business owners focus too much on the features and benefits of their products and/or services that they provide.  When in fact their business is based on the clients.  The business is dependent on attracting, servicing and developing loyal clients more than it will ever be on the product and/or services they offer.

When you get the size of Walmart you might not have to worry about your clients as much.  Then again even they have some brand loyalty.

Until we realize that, we’re doomed to failure. I tend to use smaller words.

Find ‘em. Get ‘em. Keep ‘em.

Isn’t it amazing how many people don’t get this?

Honestly, my answers depend on the setting. At da clubs or bars, to say I’m a writer piques the ladies interests more than saying what I do full-time. Who’s to say I can’t say I’m a writer, or an entrepreneur? Clients are #1. Readers are #1, and I think about it always… hence why I want to write something that my readers might find entertaining or useful.

Ryan highlighted you in his Yakezie Wrap today btw.
